The Link Between Religion and Spirituality
Generally defined as a social-cultural system, religion includes worldviews, beliefs, texts, practices, organizations and morals. It is characterized by a strong connection with tradition. The purpose of religion is to unite people and facilitate spirituality.
There are a variety of forms of religion in the world, and people are free to choose which one they prefer. Some may reject religion altogether. Others, however, believe that a particular religious group can provide them with a sense of self-worth, hope, and purpose.
In addition to the religious and secular groups, there are other smaller groups that are referred to as “spiritual but not religious” (SBNR). These are defined as religiously disinclined, although they still identify themselves as “spiritual.”
The definition of spirituality is wide-ranging. It can be defined as a search for a sacred destination, a search for purpose and meaning in life, or a quest to eradicate evil. Some studies have found that there is a link between religion and spirituality.
The SBNR is composed of two key groups: the SBNR #1 group is comprised of adults who do not identify with a religious faith, while the SBNR #2 group focuses on individuals who do not have a spiritual belief. Both groups are largely made up of Gen-Xers and Boomers.
A survey conducted in April and November of 2016 included a sample of adult Americans. The sample was composed of 1281 web-based surveys, including a representative sample of adults aged 18 to 35.
