The Difference Between Religion and Spirituality
Religion is a social-cultural system that is rooted in rituals, worldviews, and beliefs. It serves as an enhancer of values, a means of social integration, and a nudge towards a healthy lifestyle.
Religious organizations are made up of people who share a common belief system, such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. These religions usually have a large following of Boomers, Gen Xers, and women.
One of the main reasons for forming a religion is to provide a sense of purpose. Religions tend to promise reward and punishment for adhering to its rules. However, religion can be a source of frustration or even oppression if it is rigid and self-serving.
A well-known example is the “A Course in Miracles” which contains written revelations from God. Another example is Alcoholics Anonymous, which describes itself as spiritual.
Compared to a similar survey in Portugal, which shows that people tend to be more positive about religion, public opinion in Scandinavia is considerably negative. Moreover, the majority of Europeans tend to disagree about the positive or negative influence of religion. In fact, only a small percentage of respondents in Austria, Italy, and Portugal agree on the statement “religion is a good thing”.
The “spiritual” and the “religious” are the same thing, but the former is the mascot of the latter.
As for the best way to separate the two, it is a matter of concision. For example, the “spiritual” is more centered on one’s own inner soul, whereas the “religious” concentrates more on communally-given truths.
