Automobiles – The Main Means of Personal Transportation
Automobiles are the main means of personal transportation in most countries. They allow people to get to work, travel to other locations for leisure activities and visit friends or family. Automobiles are powered by an internal combustion engine, which burns a fuel such as gasoline (petrol) to create the energy that drives the wheels. An automobile can also be powered by other liquids or solids such as diesel fuel, kerosene, wood or electricity.
Modern cars have a number of features that make them safer than earlier models, including airbags, crumple zones and seat belts. Some also use a number of electronic systems to keep track of conditions such as tire pressure and vehicle stability, which are important for safe driving at high speeds.
The automobile revolutionized society in the early 1900s. It brought new jobs in the industry and related fields, and helped build a more consumer-oriented economy. It allowed people to live and work farther from each other, and to travel to places they had not been able to reach before. It encouraged the development of roads and other transportation infrastructure, as well as services such as hotels, restaurants and fast food. It also led to changes in law and government, resulting in new rules about road safety and the requirement for drivers’ licenses. It also caused harm to the environment, by causing air pollution from exhaust gases and using up land for highways.
Automobiles are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, designed for different purposes. The most common type is the sedan, which is designed to carry two or more passengers. Other types include sports cars, vans and trucks.
